Sprinkle some magic in your life…

Every cloud…

on August 26, 2012

Every cloud has a silver lining.

A little glimmer of good things to come lies behind every corner – or every cloud.

When something “bad” happens to us, it is easy to get sucked in to the negative feelings attached to that situation. Whether these be feelings of anger, guilt, shame, hurt, depression, anxiety, frustration or despair. The more we focus on these emotions, the more we attract similar emotions or situations that will make us feel negatively. This can lead to a steady downward spiral.

However, a shift in our attitude can change a bad situation into an opportunity. An opportunity to learn. An opportunity to grow.

Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyse you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are” – Bernice Johnson Reagon

I have mentioned before Newton’s law of every action having an equal and opposite reaction. So for every bad situation, there is a positive outcome. This can sound pretty alien to some people. But if you really think about it, it is possible to find the silver lining to every cloud.

For instance:

You have just been told you are going to be made redundant. Initially you will probably feel shocked, followed by feelings of anxiety about how you are going to pay your bills and how to get another job. You then may feel anger and resentment for why you have been made redundant over other colleagues. Perhaps feelings of guilt or regret creep in, wishing you had worked harder or made more money or pushed yourself more. Before you know it, the situation and your emotions have spiralled out of control leaving you feeling pretty desperate and depressed. The more you entertain these feelings, the harder it is to see any glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

Alternatively, having just been told you are being made redundant, you could focus your energy on the exciting opportunities this opens up to you. For a long while you may have been toying with a change in career, or to start up your own business and with the redundancy money you have gained you could now fund a course to get you qualified or start up the job of your dreams. Perhaps you always longed to travel but never had the money, nor enough annual leave, to do so. Now you do. Maybe you have been longing to relocate but had stayed where you were for your job location, or perhaps you have dreamed of spending more quality time at home with your family. Now you can.

See how just a change in attitude can change a hopeless situation into a hopeful situation?

“Choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude is going to determine how you’re going to live your life” – Joel Osteen

Life throws many a challenge our way, but it wouldn’t give us these challenges if it didn’t think we could cope with it. We are often much stronger and resilient than we give ourselves credit for.

Instead of focusing on that grey cloud, and the rain thats going to pour; focus on the water sources it will replenish, the crops it will grow, the drought it will cease. Focus on the house, the car and the clothes you have to keep you dry. Focus on the puddles it will create for splashing and having fun in! Focus on the glimmer of sunshine rapidly growing just beyond that little grey cloud.

When faced with a challenge, focus your attention to all the opportunities it presents you with, and all the other areas of your life that are running so smoothly. Suddenly that big dark looming rain cloud seems like a tiny fleck in the beautiful blue illuminated sky.

The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty” – Winston Churchill

Although it may be difficult to understand at first, everything has its place in helping us acheive our purpose. For every door that closes, another opens, and we just need to make the decision to walk through it, head held high, safe in the knowledge that everything will work out for the best.
